SOUTH KOREA: Jeonju – Dashi Rock Media Festival – National Intangible Heritage Center – BBUREKA, MUTO & HAEPAARY

From 16th to 18th May 2025, the DASHI ROCK MEDIA FESTIVAL took place in the South Korean city of Jeonju, featuring fantastic live performances by musicians and DJs. The venue was at the National Intangible Heritage Center, where an extensive artists‘ market was also held, showcasing handicrafts and creative products as part of the Korean Craft Week. We were able to attend the event on Saturday and watched some of the acts, including BBUREKA, MUTO and HAEPAARY. The spectacle was breathtaking and grandly orchestrated with perfect sound and visual effects on huge stage screens. Check out the photos and some video clips.

LIM YONG JU  &  NODDY WOO  –  BBUREKA

BBUREKA is an experimental music project from South Korea, founded by artists LIM YONG JU and NODDY WOO. The name refers to the Korean word for jackhammer and symbolizes the raw, rhythmic energy and noise aesthetics of everyday urban construction. BBUREKA’s central work is an album of the same name, recorded in Seoul, which creates soundscapes inspired by actual construction site sounds and modular synthesizers. Much of the sound design is influenced by the intense, booming atmosphere of large construction projects – a mix of industrial soundscapes and electronic music. BBUREKA thus represents the connection between everyday sounds and artistic sound construction in the contemporary Korean music scene. The sound was fantastic and echoed throughout the courtyard, the bass could be felt throughout the body, a great musical experience.

MINHEE  &  HYEWON  –  HAEPAARY

HAEPAARY is a South Korean alt-electronic music duo from Seoul, consisting of MINHEE (vocals & executive producer) and HYEWON (sound producer & instrumentalist). They combine traditional Korean music – in particular the ceremonial court music Jongmyo Jeryeak and the classical vocal sound Namchang Gagok – with ambient, trance, and techno elements, creating a modern, hypnotic sound that hovers between ritual, club beats and avantgarde. Their debut EP “Born by Gorgeousness” was released in 2021 and won awards at the Korean Music Awards. HAEPAARY stands for a radical reinterpretation of classical sounds – a bridge between centuries-old tradition and contemporary electronic music. MINHEE’s voice was breathtaking and captivating, accompanied by HYEWON’s fascinating sounds.

MUTO

MUTO is an experimental music and performance project from Seoul that combines music, visual art, and lighting design into a unique overall experience. The group consists of geomungo player PARK WOO-JAE, electronic musician SIN BEOM-HO, graphic creative director PARK HUN-GYU, and media artist HONG CHAN-HYEOK, who together fuse live music, electronic sounds, and visual media. Their sound mixes traditional Korean sounds – such as those produced on the geomungo zither – with electronic music and ambient elements, supported by interactive light and media art, resulting in a multi-layered, cross-genre experience. MUTO are best known for their visual, multisensory live performances and also release albums such as “Vast Plains,” which documents their artistic journey over several years. The group’s performance really gave us goosebumps, especially when PARK WOO-JAE started playing the geomungo instrument to the beats of SIN BEOM-HO. The visual effects by PARK HUN-GYU and HONG CHAN-HYEOK played on the screens in the background.
