Located in the heart of southern Gwangju in the Nam-gu district is the Baegun Street Food Zone, as part of the urban redevelopment project centered around Baegun Square. What was once a rather utilitarian traffic area has been transformed into a lively gathering place featuring small eateries, street food, and events. Since its official opening in 2022, the area has increasingly become a cultural hub where food, busking, performances, and K-pop dance are all part of the program.
A particular eye-catcher is the long wall running along the street. Originally erected as a noise barrier during construction of the Gwangju subway, the structure has been transformed into a colorful urban backdrop. Today, large-scale streetart and graffiti motifs dominate the streetscape including numerous references to Korean pop culture. Among other famous musicians and singers, large-scale BTS motifs are on display. The connection to Gwangju is particularly fitting, as BTS member J-Hope hails from the city. As part of events surrounding the Baegun Food Street, live graffiti sessions were also held, during which artists created designs on the wall right in front of the audience. Especially the artists BOOGIE BLACK, HIPER, ROCKA, STAZ and ZAKO sprayed awesome works.
