NORWAY: Streetart Tromsø - Arctic Jam Breakdance Festival & Arctic Writers Graffiti Projects

Tromsø is located beyond the Arctic Circle, has around 77.000 inhabitants and is known as the „Gateway to the Arctic“. Recommendable sights are the Arctic Cathedral, the Polar Museum and the views from the Fjellheisen cable car, but Tromsø is also a hub for contemporary urban culture. A particularly significant event is the ARCTIC JAM, which includes a streetart festival organized annually by the artist collective THE ARCTIC WRITERS. The happening encompasses not only streetart and graffiti, but also breakdance battles, hip-hop workshops, and dance performances. Young dancers from Norway and around the world come together, showcase their skills, and exchange cultural influences. The event is also supported by the SPLITCITY MAGAZINE. GATO – Arctic Jam 2021

The mural at the corner of Sjøgata and Fredrik Langesgate was painted as part of the ARCTIC JAM in 2021 and depicts Guatemalan dancer and street artist DAVID CARLOS CATUN QUINTANA, known as GATO, who also created the artwork.

The artist is originally from Guatemala, where he worked as a breakdancer and hip-hop artist, aiming to use dance to help children and young people escape dangerous environments. His activism, however, made him the target of life-threatening threats from criminal gangs, forcing him to flee his homeland. In 2019, he came to Norway as part of a SAFEMUSE artist-in-residence program. He now lives and works as an artist in Tromsø.

The mural is therefore more than just a piece of street art: it is a symbol of his story, his artistic freedom, and the difficult path he has traveled. At the same time, his situation became part of a theatre project at Hålogaland Teater, which used his story to highlight important issues such as artistic freedom, freedom of expression and democracy.

„Porten til Ishavet“ – „Gateway to the Arctic Ocean“ – MARIT BOCKELIE & KINE HELLEBUST

The mural at the Torgcentret mall created by MARIT BOCKELIE and KINE HELLEBUST was unveiled on 7th September 2024. Marit Bockelie is a renowned Norwegian artist who has created numerous public mosaics and murals in Tromsø and was awarded the Order of St. Olav. She was born in Bodø on 9th October 1933, and at over 90 years old she is still active in the art world.
