NORWAY: Streetart Bergen - Murals, Graffiti and Urban Art Collection

Bergen is with 290.000 inhabitants Norway’s second largest city and is located on the west coast of the country, surrounded by seven mountains and deep fjords. The historic Hanseatic quarter of Bryggen with its colorful wooden houses, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is particularly worth seeing, as well the lively fish market, the Bergenhus Fortress or the viewing platform on Fløyen, accessible by the Fløibanen funicular, offers an impressive view of the city and the sea. In addition to culture and nature, Bergen has also established itself as a center for modern streetart in recent years, in strong contrast to many other cities in Norway, where there is a zero-tolerance policy towards graffiti. In Bergen, however, the streets are colorful and artists from all over the world have transformed numerous building walls into colorful works of art. The city has a rich local art scene with many artists from different fields. „A Troll in Bergen“ – M.U.M.

„The Mother“ – M.U.M.

The 24-meter-high mural is located at St. Jakobs plass 9, just outside Bergen’s city center. It covers 400 square meters, spans eight floors and the Norwegian artist M.U.M. was working on it for 17 days to complete it. The image depicts a meditating figure, which, according to the artist, is meant to encourage a more conscious lifestyle and environmental activism. The bees and flowers symbolize nature, and the artwork draws attention to the decline of bee populations due to pesticides.
