NICARAGUA: Streetart Balgüe – Graffiti and Urban Art Collection

Balgüe is a small village in the southeastern part of Ometepe Island in the Rivas Department of Nicaragua, located directly at the foot of the dormant Maderas Volcano. It has only about 1.300 inhabitants and is considered one of the more remote, nature-loving places on the island. Balgüe was settled by indigenous communities even before the Spanish colonial period, as evidenced by scattered pre-Columbian petroglyphs and places of worship around the village. Today, the village has developed into an important destination for ecotourism, with agricultural projects, permaculture initiatives, and eco-friendly accommodations that are in harmony with nature and sustainable living. Attractions and activities include hikes to the petroglyphs, tours of the historic coffee and agricultural farm Finca Magdalena, and climbing or walking in the nature reserve on the Maderas volcano. From here, there is also a beautiful view of the neighboring Concepción volcano and the lush cloud forests of the island’s interior. The photos were taken by MELITTA HORVATH. If you want to contribute to this project and if you also have photos of graffiti and streetart from this location, send them to info@vagabundler.com.
