NICARAGUA: Streetart Altagarcia – Urban Art at Lake Nicaragua

Altagracia is a municipality in the Rivas Department of Nicaragua with approximately 23.000 inhabitants, located on the volcanic island of Ometepe in Lake Cocibolca, known in English as Lake Nicaragua. The town was originally called Astagalpa, which means “House of Herons” in the Nahuatl language, and is one of the oldest settlements on Ometepe. The area was inhabited over 4.000 years ago by indigenous groups, whose ceramics, petroglyphs, and places of worship bear witness to their early presence. Later, in the 16th century, the Spanish also reached the island, and the present-day municipality was formed through changing colonial influences. Among the notable sights is the Church of Altagracia, whose older building from 1924 is still preserved and, alongside the newer parish church, is a distinctive historical structure. Also central is the sculpture park with large pre-Columbian basalt figures and the Museo de Ometepe with archaeological and ethnographic collections on the history of the island. Also colorful creations can be found in the streets of the city. The photos were taken by MELITTA HORVATH.
