MALTA: Streetart Gżira and Manoel Island

The small island Manoel Island also belongs to the Maltese district Gzira north of Valletta. The promenade of Gżira and the little island are not the highlights of the city, but worth a visit for a short walk. There is a small fort, a bathing spot popular with locals and otherwise closed ruins or construction sites. In addition shortly after the bridge to the island, there is the lovingly and creatively assembled Duck Village which is as well featured here on the website. This place can definitely be counted as urban art. But there is a lot more to explore in Gżira . Check out as well the main article Streetart Malta.

If you keep walking beside the promenade and more into the quarter, into the alleys and look at the houses, then it’s rather boring. In this part of town, this dreary ochre reigns over and over again and every second street has some building sites or construction stuff. Eternally long walls stand crisscrossing the neighborhood and don’t even have a single tag. But there are still a few special spots or even sometimes here and there  a few letters.

Artist:  COOKER

  Location: GOG Bubble Tea

There is definitely the JUNGLE JOY bar in the Triq L-Msida 2 to mention. The alternative and cosy shop always has good music and the local artist COOKER has painted the interior and part of the exterior facade with colourful jungle animals. At the Bubble Tea Shop GOG on the promenade of Gżira, COOKER has also conjured up a grandiose mural featuring a psycho rabbit. The exact address is 133 The Strand. Right around the corner in Strand Hotel in 115 there is also an interesting painting in the lobby.

The artwork above is the one located in the lobby of the 115 The Strand Hotel.

Otherwise, we have broadened the classification a bit, there are also a few gates or a coffee-tuk-tuk. In this neighborhood we found more of these ceramic door saints, which eventually led to that article and collection though. Still it is about to walk around with open eyes and be interested in your surrounding. Sometimes when you just walk around a corner, or look over some wall, sometimes you can find fascinating things.
