Messina is a port city in the north-east of the Italian island of Sicily, separated from the Italian mainland by the Strait of Messina. Worth seeing are the Norman cathedral with its astronomical clock from the 15th century, the Fontana di Orione or the Neptune Fountain. Nearby is Mount Etna, the highest volcano in Europe, as well as numerous ancient Greek ruins and medieval churches. Of course, you will also find urban art in the streets. Especially during the DISTRART PROJECT several amazing murals were created. Here are photos by ELKE KORNHAAS. If you also have photos from Messina, send them to info@vagabundler.com and we will add them to the page.
„Metamorphosis“ – Distrart Project – ANC & POKI

As part of the City of Messina’s “Distrart” project, an urban regeneration event through the language of street art, five large murals were painted in 2015 on some of the facades of the former granaries and former general warehouses silos in the Campo delle Vettovaglie street area. The giant mural on the facade of the former granaries silos near the Cavallotti parking lot is titled “Metamorphosis,” the work was made by the artists ANC and POKI where Messina is depicted as a huge hermit crab with Montorsoli’s 16th-century lantern at the top.

The other murals are “Mediterranea” by JULIETA.XLF, a young Spanish artist, places a blue mermaid crying blood in the foreground against a background of polychrome majolica, because the sea is full of blood. LUCA ZAMOC depicts “Jason and the Dragon,” the myth of the Argonauts who passed through the Strait. SEACREATIVE, on the façade of the former General Warehouses, painted the figure of “Lillo the Sailor,” a name from Messina because it is short for Letterio, who turns his back to the sea and after his toil of the day returns home with a fish under his arm. Finally, NEMO’S, proposes the dramatic theme of the deaths of migrants at sea, four naked bodies hanging like cloths hung out to dry. – City of Messina
