Tribute to football legend Diego Maradona
The „Estadio Diego Armando Maradona“ is the headquarters of the famous club Asociación Atlética Argentinos Juniors, often just called Argentinos for short. Legends such as Diego Maradona come from this camp, but the great Lionell Messi also played his first game for the Argentinian national team on this pitch on June 29th 2004. Many years earlier, on October 20th 1976, Diego Armando Maradona made his debut in the club’s jersey at the age of 15 in the place that now bears his name.
The stadium was rebuilt between 1993 and 2003 and opened on 26th December 2003, replacing the already outdated „Estadio Argentinos Juniors“ from 1940. As part of the renovation, the new stadium was renamed in honor of Diego Maradona, who started his career here. It can now seat 24,800 spectators with a natural grass field measuring 100 x 66 meters and features the museum „El Templo del Fútbol“ or „The Temple of Soccer“. A tour is not only worthwhile because of the interesting history of the venue and the players, but it also includes a visit of the stadium halls and a walk on the pitch directly after a match.
The Argentinos Juniors club was founded in 1904 and has won five national and international titles in its long history, including the Copa Libertadores de América. Time and again, world-class players have come from these ranks and got their start here at this sports venue. But the absolute idol is and remains, of course, the idolized and fantastic Maradona. In his honor, not only the stadium got its name, but also countless beautiful urban artworks in portrait style were created around the large building by local artist MARLEY, also there is a mosaic artwork at the museum from LAS AYA.
