Diego Armando Maradona
Diego Armando Maradona Franco was an Argentine football player and coach. He is one of the “legends of world football” and is considered one of the best football players in history. He was born on October 30, 1960 in Lanús, Argentina, and died on November 25th 2020 in Dique Luján in Argentina.
Maradona became already famous at the start of his career with the Argentinos Juniors at the age of 15, before moving to the Boca Juniors and becoming Argentine champion in 1981. Then the “Golden Boy” (El Pibe de Oro) moved to Europe to FC Barcelona. There he celebrated just one important title by winning the Pokal Cup in 1983. Plagued by illnesses and injuries, he had to leave the club after only two years because of numerous scandals and joined then the SSC Napoli in Italy. With the underdog from Campania, who was close to relegation before his arrival, he celebrated the greatest successes of his club career between 1984 and 1991, including the only championship title in club history in 1987 and 1990 and winning the UEFA Cup in 1989.
The 1979 junior world champion led the Argentine national team as team captain in Mexico in 1986 to win their second world championship after 1978. The 25-year-old scored two of the most famous goals in football history in four minutes in a 2:1 win against England in the quarter finals when he put a high ball with his hand – the so called “Hand of God” – into the goal and then after a dribble over about 60 meters scored the World Cup goal of the century. Overall, Maradona took part in four World Cup tournaments in 1982, 1986, 1990 and 1994. Altogether he scored 34 goals in 91 international matches.
