In 2007, a group of local skaters started a movement to have their own space to practice their passion. They presented a project to the local municipality, and in 2011, a mega skate park was inaugurated in the Mataderos neighborhood of Buenos Aires! The design was created by specialized architects, and the construction was supervised by the Argentine Skateboarding Association.
The skate park is located in Parque Alberdi between Avenida Directorio and Lisandro de la Torre. In addition to having ramps and concrete bowls for this type of sport that invites you to free your mind, develop your imagination, release energy, stimulate making friends and going out on the street, it merges with the urban architecture that surrounds it, impregnated with urban art, with a parkour track, an amphitheater and a lake; all of this, of course, adorned with an atmosphere of excellent energy.
In the early days of the movement, it was decided to found a Skate School to offer free classes for children up to 12 years old. At the time, they promoted the action by putting up flyers in elementary schools, so they achieved great diffusion and attendance, gradually consolidating the project. The Skate Park has an official Instagram account that is supported by WHIRO SKATEBOARDS, MUNDO HOSTIL, CENTURY DIST, BATALLA DEL GHETTO, JOHNNY DECK, WRONG WAY, LOCALISMO and NO COMPLY. They currently continue with the Skate School that offers classes to people of any age and with no prior experience, and there the attendants receive support and help.
But urban art is not limited to the mega skate park or the parkour space, but if we walk around the vicinity we will find expressions on many walls. The themes are always of the type tributes, history, culture, football, and social struggle. We see many walls with images of Justo Suarez, known as “El Torito de Mataderos”, a lightweight boxer of immense popularity. Many others that make references to the local football team, Club Atlético Nueva Chicago, and, as the neighborhood of Mataderos occupied in the 1960s and 1970s a preponderant place in the Argentine meat industry, we also find many paintings that refer to the theme.
On the side of social struggle, we can see celebrations for Women’s Day and the achievement of the right to legal, safe, and free abortion, and several walls that remember times of great anguish and social pain experienced during periods of military dictatorship.
