NICARAGUA: Streetart Masaya – Graffiti and Urban Art at the Masaya Volcano

Masaya is a city in southwestern Nicaragua at the foot of the Masaya volcano with a population of around 195.000. The area was settled by indigenous peoples, mainly the Chorotega, in pre-Hispanic times, and its name means “place of deer” or “burning mountain” in the indigenous language. Later, it became part of the Spanish colonial region and developed into an important cultural center in Nicaragua. The city is considered the “cradle of Nicaraguan folklore” and is known for its colorful traditions, dance, music, and crafts. Among the most important sights are the Mercado de Artesanías with regional handicrafts, the historic center with the 18th-century church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, and the lively Monimbó neighborhood with its handicrafts. Just outside the city is Masaya Volcano National Park with active craters and volcanic landscapes that are among the most striking natural attractions in the region. But on this page we focus on the urban artworks around the streets. The photos were taken by MELITTA HORVATH. If you want to contribute to this project and if you also have photos of graffiti and streetart from this location, send them to info@vagabundler.com.
