Somoto is a small town in northern Nicaragua and the capital of the Madriz department, near the border with Honduras. The town is located at an altitude of about 700 meters, has a population of around 40,000, and is known for the Cañón de Somoto, a spectacular canyon that was only scientifically explored in 2004 and is now one of the most impressive natural attractions in the country. In the city center is the Santiago Apóstol Cathedral, an important religious and historical building from the colonial era. Also worth seeing is the Parque Central, which serves as a social meeting place and offers a good insight into the everyday life of the population. In the vicinity of Somoto there are also several miradores, or viewpoints, from which you can enjoy a panoramic view of the hilly landscape of northern Nicaragua. And of course there are also urban atworks around town. These photos were taken by MELITTA HORVATH. If you want to contribute to this project and if you also have photos of graffiti and streetart from this location, send them to info@vagabundler.com.

Tribute to FSLN

The Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) is a left-wing political party in Nicaragua that was founded in 1961 as a guerrilla movement. After the fall of the Somoza dictatorship in 1979, the FSLN ruled until 1990 and again under Daniel Ortega since 2007. It evolved from a revolutionary liberation struggle into an authoritarian regime that exercises far-reaching control today.
