NICARAGUA: Streetart León – Remember the Heroes, Muralismo Grupo & Urban Art

The city of León, with a population of around 210.000, captivates visitors with its colonial charm and fascinating history. The grand Cathedral impresses with its historic architecture, the Rubén Darío Museum offers insights into the life of the famous poet, Cerro Negro volcano invites visitors to enjoy adventures such as sandboarding, and the CONVENTO DE SAN FRANCISCO showcases art and history. Of course, there are also beautiful works of urban art in the streets. A particularly interesting and legendary mural was created over a large area and during several years in collaboration with local artists and artists from Hamburg, Germany. The photos were taken by MELITTA HORVATH. If you want to contribute to this project and if you also have photos of graffiti and streetart from this location, send them to info@vagabundler.com.

Tribute to Andrés Castro

Andrés Castro Estrada was a Nicaraguan farmer and soldier who became famous during the Battle of San Jacinto on 14th September 1856. When his firearm ran out of ammunition, he killed an enemy combatant with a well-aimed stone. He is considered a national hero in Nicaragua, and his deed symbolizes courage, determination, and patriotism in the fight for national sovereignty. Castro was promoted to the rank of sergeant during the administration of General Tomás Martínez Guerrero. Born in 1831 in Jícaro Galán in the comunidad San Francisco del Carnicero, he was the son of Regino Castro and Javiera Estrada, he joined the Septentrión army at the age of 23, and died many years later on 8th August 1882.

„Grupo de Muralismo Hamburgo &  León“  –  BALTAZAR GUTIERREZ,  CARLOS PINEDA,  JORGE TOBAR,  KLAUS KLINGER,  RAFAEL FLORES  &  SÖNKE NISSEN-KNAACK

This extensive work, which is quite large in length and also extends upwards with a mural, was created in a collaboration between local artists from León and visiting artists from Hamburg, Germany. It was a process that took several years and involved various stages, starting in 1988 and culminating in the completion of the truly enormous concept wall in 1990. Over time, the facade was exposed to the sun, wind, and weather, which had damaged the paint and the work, so it was restored again in 1996 and recoated with fresh colors.
