The underground shopping center at Gangnam Terminal is also known as “Goto Mall” and is directly connected to the subway lines 3, 7 and 9. There are more than 600 shops, restaurants, and boutiques located underground here. In addition, several long underground corridors lead away from the mall to other subway stations. One of these corridors is a real gem and a treasure trove for fans of urban art. At the west entrance of GoTo Mall, the path leads north, so don’t go into the mall, but turn into the tunnel in front of it. We made that mistake and ended up wandering around the mall forever looking for graffiti. It’s best to ask for the “Goteo Sebit Tourist Information Center,” which is located right in the middle of the long corridor that leads north under Banpo-daero Street to Hangnam Park on the Han River. Along this approximately 500-meter-long walkway passage, the magnificent “24 Hours Project” was created at the RAEMIAN ONE BAILEY STREETART GALLERY in 2024, in which 24 renowned Korean artists each created a work that deals with a specific hour of the day. From 0:00 to 24:00, with motifs about getting up, from lunchtime to rush hour or going to sleep. Pedestrians can experience Seoul’s daily rhythm through creative and also amusing artworks.
Each artist has interpreted the hour in their own style, resulting in a wide variety of techniques, from graffiti to comics to manga and abstraction. The passage has become an extensive underground gallery that provides a good insight into the Korean streetart scene. While you’re there, you should also stop by the tourist office, which is highly recommended. The staff can provide lots of information about streetart locations around and other tips. When you reach the end of the tunnel, assuming you started in the south, another masterpiece by Spanish artist LALONE awaits you in the northern foyer, featuring Picasso motifs to mark the city partnership between Seoul and Malaga.
