The IHWA MURAL VILLAGE is a historic residential neighborhood in Seoul’s Jongno District that became a popular cultural and tourist destination following an art project in 2006. As part of the project, numerous artists transformed the narrow alleys with colorful murals, mosaics, and creative art installations to revitalize the neighborhood and promote tourism. Since then, numerous other works of urban art have been added. The village is situated on a slope of Naksan Mountain, allowing visitors not only to discover the artwork but also to enjoy beautiful views over the rooftops of Seoul. Particularly well-known are the artistically designed staircases, painted building facades, and small sculptures found along the winding streets. In addition to the artworks, cozy cafés, small galleries, and local shops invite visitors to linger. Today, Ihwa Mural Village is one of Seoul’s most famous art districts. At the same time, it remains a residential neighborhood, which is why visitors are asked to be considerate of the residents and to explore the neighborhood respectfully.
