The World of Banksy – The Immersive Experience
Graffiti on train stations first appeared in the late 1970s, and now this underground practice is making a big comeback thanks to “The World of Banksy – The Immersive Experience” in both literal and conceptual ways. Following the major success of the last show at Milan Central Station, the exhibition went now to the Torino Porta Nuova railway station where “The World of Banksy – The Immersive Experience” is presented in the newly renovated lounge area.
The exhibition highlights influential pieces from Banksy and can be perceived as the framework of his career. The visitors can admire over 100 subversive artworks from 25th February to 29th May 2022 in a new and enticing environment and discover artworks which no longer exist because they have been destroyed, sold or stolen. Get lost in a journey around the world among the artist’s works found in the most unexpected places: United Kingdom, France, USA, Australia, Mali and the Bethlehem wall. The exhibition retraces the history and social message of Banksy’s murals, leading to reflect in an underground dimension. In the spirit of the artist’s famous statement “Copyright is for losers”, The World Of Banksy – The Immersive Experience is 100% unauthorized and organized without his involvement. Art lover and photographer Luigi Savoia visited this fantastic place and documented the critical creative artworks, as well the shown short clips and the documentary movie „The Untold Truth Of Banksy“ by Grunge magazine. And even without the great exhibition, the building is architecturally admirable. Below you will find the corresponding sub-pages.
Who is Banksy?
Nobody knows him, yet everybody knows his name. He is probably the most famous and the most mysterious graffiti artist in the world. Some consider him a prankster, whereas others, an amazing artist. He was featured by the Times Magazine as one of the top 100 influential people in the world in 2010, along with names such as Obama, Steve Jobs and Lady Gaga.
“There’s nothing more dangerous than someone who wants to make the world a better place.“ – Banksy
In Bristol in the 1980s, graffiti emerges as a form of expression that was practiced mainly by young, middle-to-lower class city-dwellers. At the same time, John Nation from Barton Hill visits Amsterdam. Looking at the pulsating graffiti of the city streets, he is literally captivated and starts documenting everything that is available. He then passes that inspiring material to the newly igniting street art group of the Barton Hill Youth Club.
„Tagging signatures“ was the generic work that was done at the time, using spray paint. The local law enforcement began to crack down on the delinquents who were shamelessly destroying public property. The Barton Hill Youth Club turned out into a haven for these „delinquents“. It was the place, where the first Bristolian graffiti artists emerged. Banksy was allegedly among them. At the time, this new art form was more of a male thing, taking place at night and usually dangerous, both physically and legally.
„I don’t know why people are so keen to put the details of their private life in public; they forget that invisibility is a superpower.“ – Banksy
