THAILAND: Streetart Surat Thani – Fantastic Concept Walls by SUTIN TANTIPAS and ART FOR DEC

The city of Surat Thani in the province of the same name has around 126,000 inhabitants and is located on the southern east coast of the Gulf of Thailand in Bandon Bay. The town on the Tapi River is a popular starting point for trips to the many idyllic islands. There are countless pieces of streetart in the alleys especially in the fisher and worksmen district and even some large murals. The painter and art teacher SUTIN TANTIPAS in particular has created a large number of fantastic concept walls with his ART FOR DEC project together with his students. He mainly depicts the people of the city and everyday situations in a realistic manner. His preference for details is particularly interesting, and his works open up entire everyday miniature worlds with glimpses into all-purpose stores, living rooms or workshops. The great photos were collected by DIANA and THOMAS aka the NOMADS ON WHEELS, who travel the globe with their mobile home. Unfortunately, they had to leave their cool orange van behind for this trip and took a plane to beautiful Thailand.

„Surat Thani Province Motto“  –  SUTIN TANTIPAS

On March 28th 2023, the large-scale mural was created by SUTIN TANTIPAS as part of the „Surat Thani Province Motto“ project at the walls of the Ban Don Municipality School. The artist worked for three months on the four-storey-high work and wants to draw attention to the preservation of cultural-historical buildings and sites. In particular, a Buddha statue in Krabi was torn down at the time and the materials auctioned off, and the artist is calling for more support, maintenance and conservation from the government and relevant authorities, but also from the citizens.

„Chak Phum Pha Pa Festival“  –   SUTIN TANTIPAS

The Chak Phum Pha Pa Festival is one ofthe most famous Buddhist traditional festivals of Surat Thani province. It is held annually on the night of the end of Buddhist Lent Day, the 15th day of the Waxing Moon of the 11th Lunar month of the Thai Lunar Calendar. In the present day, people will put small trees or branches in front of their houses. Then they put Buddhist monks‘ inner robes and the eight necessities of a Buddhist monk on their trees and branches. This re-enacts the „Pha Pa“, which means „Robe in wild“, a practice from the Buddhist era. Monks will take the robes and necessities before attending the Chak Phra Festival which is held on the next day.
