In 2016, after the death of the popular King Bhumibol Adulyadej or Rama IX, the ninth of the Chakri Dynasty, the provincial government of Chiang Rai commissioned a group of young artists led by the painter CHAWAS CHAMPASAEN to decorate the central bus station as part of the annual Flower Festival. Rama IX was born on December 5th 1927 in Cambridge, USA and died on October 13th 2016 in Bangkok. With his royal term from June 9th 1946 until his death, he was not only the longest reigning monarch in the history of Thailand, but also the longest-serving head of state in the whole world. Therefore artworks were made in his honour and to represent the Thail people and their culture at the central arrival spot of the town. The various pillars inside the bus terminal were given beautiful portrait paintings with a series of Thai women and some large-scale concept walls with motifs of history, tradition and local landscape were also created on the outside facades. The article also includes photos from a visit to a creative local artist and from other urban artworks around the city. The architectural historic sites like White Temple or Blue temple are on the page Architecture Chiang Rai and especially for the BAAN DAM MUSEUM by THAWAN DUCHANEE there is also an individual page. The great photos were collected by DIANA and THOMAS aka the NOMADS ON WHEELS, who travel the globe with their mobile home. Unfortunately, they had to leave their cool orange van behind for this trip and took a plane to beautiful Thailand.
