SOUTH KOREA: Seoul – Banpo-daero – Underground Urban Art – Pablo Picasso Tribute – LALONE

Malaga Loves Seoul

Below the surface of the Korean captial Seoul a vibrant Spanish experience has come to life thanks to the collaboration between the Spanish Tourism Authority, the Malaga Tourism Authority, and the Seocho-gu Office. Since its inauguration during the „Picasso Mural Opening Ceremony“ on 9th July 2024 you can admire this impressive 65-meter-long mural One Bayley Public Walking Passage, a lively underground tunnel that connects Banpo Hangang Park, accessible from Seoul Subway Line 3, 7, and the 9 Express Terminal Station, it is open 24/7.

This spectacular project was brought to life by EDUARDO LUQUE, a talented artist who triumphed in the Spanish Urban Art Championship, better known under his graffiti artist name LALONE. In 17 days he painted the artwork by himself and the motifs show several times Pablo Picasso and typical elements of his works, as well sceneries from his life and sights from the city of Malaga.

This initiative is all about showcasing graffiti art by selecting top countries across each continent that visit Spain. This year, they announced that Seoul, South Korea, has been chosen as the fourth city, joining the ranks of Shanghai, China; Basel, Switzerland; and Munich, Germany. Spain’s ambassador to Korea, Guillermo Kirkpatrick, shared the enthusiasm during the opening ceremony: „Last year marked the 50th anniversary of Picasso’s death, and next year we’ll celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations between Korea and Spain! This project is a fantastic celebration of art and friendship between our nations!“.

While you’re there, you should also stop by the tourist office located in the middle of the long tunnel, which is highly recommended. The staff can provide lots of information about streetart locations around and other tips. When you follow the tunnel to the south, you will find another awesome urban art project with local artists featuring 24 murals at the GoTo Mall 24 Hours Project, where each artist made an artwork for one hour of the day.
