This historic site, emblematic of the human rights struggle, is located in what is now the Nueva Las Condes financial district. During the administration of Salvador Allende (1971-1973), the Villa San Luis housing complex was built on the grounds of the former San Luis estate. The goal was to socially integrate working-class families and residents of informal settlements, enabling them to live near their workplaces in an area of high property value. Following the 1973 coup d’état, the military dictatorship took over the complex and forcibly evicted more than 1,000 families. The vacated apartments were temporarily handed over to military personnel. In the 1990s, most of the land at Villa San Luis was sold to private real estate developers. The housing blocks were demolished to make way for the construction of office towers and skyscrapers.
The photos shown here date back to 2009, a time when new buildings and skyscrapers were being constructed while Villa San Luis was being demolished, leaving behind only two completely abandoned blocks. Graffiti, stencil and tags covered every floor, staircase, and wall. Notable pieces include flops by members of the WSMD CREW, TIPS CREW and SENEK. Graffiti by PV51 and SOOOIS can also be seen, especially it is often called the zone of the VSL CREW. The evicted families and memory advocacy groups fought for recognition of the violation of their rights. In 2017, the National Monuments Council declared the remaining blocks a Historic Monument. The Villa San Luis Evicted Families Foundation, together with the Ministry of Cultures and other organizations, spearheaded the creation of the Villa San Luis Resistance Memorial Museum.
