The Malleco Bridge and Patrimony
This bridge was part of the old railway line that connected Angol with Renaico and the rest of the country. It belongs to the original section of the railway that was built between 1876 and 1878. At that time, Angol was the final destination of the line coming from Chillán.
What makes this bridge on Route R-168 special is its hybrid design: it uses hewn stone pillars, but with a slightly more robust design to withstand the Malleco River’s flooding in that section where the river is wider. The metal superstructure was brought in sections from Europe and assembled on site.
The development of the Renaico-Angol branch line and the southward expansion of the railway spurred the creation of the Canteras de Deuco. With the decommissioning of the railway in the 1970’s, the bridge fell into disuse. Eventually, the entire branch line disappeared, leaving no track but only the bridge over the Malleco River.
