Nada que Celebrar 12. Octubre – Nothing to Celebrate 12th October
On October 12, 1492, Christopher Columbus arrived in America. In past times, that event was celebrated as the arrival of civilization in these “wild” lands. Already today, there are some Latin American countries that commemorate it as the Day of Indigenous Resistance.
This graffiti is called “Nada que Celebrar 12 – Oct.” (Nothing to Celebrate 12 October), alluding to the occupation of the land of the Mapuche people. Furthermore, in the first years of the Spanish conquest, Angol was the last Spanish frontier before the Wallmapu or land of the Mapuche people.
The mural’s author PRISCILA FERNÁNDEZ TILLERÍA aka PRI separates her work with a Mapuche symbolism consisting of a Cultrun – that’s a Mapuche drum – and a Trariwe, which is a Mapuche waistband. On the left side of this symbolism are the title of the mural and a figure of a Mapuche woman that floats but connected to the Mapuche symbolism.
On the right side, we have Mapuche symbols and crafts, ending the mural with some tags from PRI’s collaborators, such as JUANJO and PESTE. Finally, it is noted that this mural disappeared and that it had the following signature: „PRI Oct. 2015“.
