Here is the “Ex Hospital de Angol”, inaugurated in 1884. This hospital was very important in the development of Angol towards the end of the 19th century. Coincidentally, in August 1887 a pandemic arrived in the region, cholera, making this hospital an important place in the development of medicine and health care in Chile.
This hospital became the most important in the Malleco province, Araucanía Region. It stopped working in 1971. And since that time, the building has been abandoned, even after 2007 when it was declared a Historic Monument. The facade of the hospital that faces Ilabaca Street is the only side of the building that can be seen by passersby. To see the other facades of the hospital, you have to go through bars and walls, in other words, trespass the building.
In this facade, there are stencils, graffiti, tags and drawings. The stencils that are seen near the windows on the second floor are reminiscent of the Egyptian culture. Below are several faces and one of Salvador Allende stands out, the world’s first democratically elected Marxist president (1970). The iron door has several tags. The graffiti of the bottom are by Alapinta (Instagram: @alapinta.cl ) and Maher (Instagram: @maher_letras_kaneras ). All those graffiti were in a building attached to the hospital that was lost after the February 2010 earthquake (magnitude 8.8).
