Byron Bay is a coastal town in the northeast of the state of New South Wales, located at Cape Byron, the easternmost point of the Australian mainland. It has a population of approximately 10.500, but the wider Byron Shire is home to about 36.000 people. The region has been inhabited by Indigenous groups of the Bundjalung Nation for over 20.000 years. European settlement began after 1770, when James Cook sighted the coast. A central hub for urban art is Elysium Lane, a former alleyway that was converted into a large open-air gallery in 2017 and has since regularly featured large-scale murals by international and Australian artists. Around the ARTS FACTORY and in the surrounding streets, there are also many rotating street art pieces, often created by travelers, local artists, or community projects.
