Streetart Sydney – Down Under Metropolis and its Urban Art

The fantastic DARWIN STREET ART FESTIVAL, or in short DSAF, is an annual street art event in Darwin, founded in 2017 to culturally revitalize the downtown area and artistically transform vacant spaces. The festival usually takes place over several weeks between May and August with key hotspots including laneways and streets in the CBD such as Austin Lane, West Lane, and Shadforth Lane; in addition, the projects have expanded to suburbs like Parap, Nightcliff, and Casuarina. Since its inception, over 130 large-scale works have been created in the city, resulting in Darwin now being virtually covered in murals.

Darwin – Art to the Streets, Streetart Awards & Proper Creative

Darwin is the capital of Australia’s Northern Territory and has a population of around 150.000. The city was founded in 1869 and named after the naturalist Charles Darwin. Among its main attractions are the Darwin Waterfront Precinct, Mindil Beach with its markets, and the Kakadu National Park in the surrounding area. In recent years, Darwin has also emerged as a major hub for urban art, particularly through the ART TO THE STREETS projects, which promote large-scale murals in public spaces. This growing attention is also reflected in competitions such as the AUSTRALIAN STREET ART AWARDS, where works from Darwin are regularly nominated. The urban art agency PROPER CREATIVE also plays a central role.

Brisbane Street Art Festival – BSAF – Awesome Annual Urban Art Event since 2016

The fantastic BRISBANE STREET ART FESTIVAL, or BSAF for short, was founded in 2016 and is now one of Australia’s leading public art events. Every year, the festival transforms building facades, underpasses, and public spaces throughout the city into large-scale murals and installations. Since its inception, over 400 works of art have been created by local, national, and international artists. The program includes live murals, exhibitions, workshops, artist talks, and community projects. In 2025, the BSAF celebrated its 10th anniversary

Streetart Brisbane – Queensland Murals, Graffiti and Urban Art

Brisbane is the capital of the Australian state of Queensland and, with a population of approximately 2.7 million, is Australia’s third-largest city. Brisbane was founded in 1824 as a British penal colony on the Brisbane River, named after the then-governor, Sir Thomas Brisbane. Among the most famous attractions are the man-made lagoon at South Bank Parklands, the Story Bridge, the Brisbane City Botanic Gardens, and the Queensland Cultural Centre district with its museums, galleries, and theaters or the Sciencentre with the SparkLab. And there are countless urban artworks around the streets!

Brisbane – Charged Urban Art – Electricity Boxes Series – ARTFORCE BRISBANE & URBAN SMART PROJECTS

The ARTFORCE BRISBANE project was launched by the City of Brisbane in 1999 and is now one of the most successful public art programs in Australia. From the outset, the initiative aimed to enhance the aesthetic appeal of unassuming and often overlooked infrastructure elements, such as electrical and traffic signal boxes. Since its launch over 1.200 boxes throughout the city have been painted, with more than 5.000 people participating in their design. Local artists can apply and around 80 objects are available each year.

Perth – Forgotten Spaces, Public Perth, Activate Art Walk & Moorditj Mural Masters

Perth is the capital of Western Australia, located on the Swan River near the Indian Ocean. Founded in 1829, it is the country’s fourth-largest city with a population of 2.3 million. The alleys Grand Lane, Prince Lane, and Moolap-Kanana Lane are worth visiting, as they have been artistically enhanced with colorful murals by various artists as part of the FORGOTTEN SPACES PROJECT. You can also find works created during the Strange Festival, at the Aboriginal street art jams MOORDITJ MURAL MASTERS, or through the urban art project PUBLIC by FORM, with works from it’s three editions between 2014 and 2016.

Perth – Wolf Lane – Form Public ’14 – Graffiti, Streetart & Murals

The Wolf Lane in Perth was originally an unremarkable back alley used primarily for delivery traffic and waste disposal. The first renovations began around 2001, when the city sought to revitalize the lane and better integrate it into the city center. A decisive transformation began in 2014 with the urban art project PUBLIC by FORM, in which the alley’s walls were adorned with large-scale murals by international and local artists. As a result, Wolf Lane evolved from a functional back alley into a well-known creative hotspot in the city center.

Perth – Northbridge District – TAFE Murals, Form Public Project 2015 & Streetside Festival

Northbridge is a centrally located neighborhood just north of downtown Perth. It is considered one of the city’s most important cultural and entertainment districts, featuring a vibrant nightlife, bars, clubs, restaurants, and cafés, as well as a high concentration of cultural institutions such as theaters and galleries. The neighborhood also has a strong multicultural character and is home to Perth’s Chinatown, where many Asian restaurants and shops are located. It is also a hot spot for urban art. Also the urban art project PUBLIC by FORM took place in 2015 and as well in 2014 with it’s huge murals at North Metropolitan TAFE.

Cairns – Graffiti and Urban Art in northern Queensland

Cairns is a city in northern Queensland with around 150.000 residents in the urban area and it was established in the late 19th century as a port serving nearby gold and tin mining operations and later the sugar industry. The city has developed a growing urban art scene, with murals and public artworks playing an increasingly visible role in the cityscape. Many works reference Indigenous culture, tropical landscapes, and regional identity, often created in collaboration with local communities. A major platform for Indigenous contemporary art is the CAIRNS INDIGENOUS ART FAIR and the CAIRNS FESTIVAL also contributes through installations, performances, and streetart projects.

Fremantle – Urban Art in Western Australia’s main port

Fremantle is a port city about 19 km southwest of Perth with around 30.000 residents. Founded in 1829 as part of the Swan River Colony, it quickly became Western Australia’s main port. The city is strongly defined by well-preserved colonial-era architecture. Key landmarks include the Round House, the oldest surviving building in Western Australia, the Fremantle Markets, the Fremantle Arts Centre, as well as the harbor and the historic West End district. At the same time, Fremantle is known as a creative hub with a vibrant streetart scene and great events such as the FREMANTLE BIENNALE and the FREMANTLE STREET ARTS FESTIVAL, which promote urban art in public spaces.

The Gold Coast is a major city on the southeast coast of Australia in the state of Queensland and, with a population of around 650.000, is one of the country’s largest cities. The city is famous for its long sandy beaches, particularly Surfers Paradise, as well as for natural areas such as Lamington National Park and iconic landmarks like the Q1 Tower with its observation deck. In addition a vibrant street art scene has also developed in recent years, particularly in neighborhoods like Miami, Burleigh Heads, and Southport. Cultural initiatives include the BLEACH FESTIVAL and the SWELL SCULPTURE FESTIVAL, which combine urban art, performance, and installations in public spaces.

Gold Coast – Swell Sculpture Festival – Open Air Exhibition at Currumbin Beach

The SWELL SCULPTURE FESTIVAL is an annual open-air art festival held at Currumbin Beach on the Gold Coast. It typically runs for ten days in September and transforms approximately one kilometer of coastline into a freely accessible sculpture exhibition in public space. The festival was founded in 2001 as an initiative to bring more public art into the urban space of the Gold Coast and to use beaches as exhibition spaces. Since then, it has become a fixture on the regional cultural calendar and is now curated by a nonprofit organization led by NATASHA EDWARDS, with the participation of various artists and groups.

Townsville is a coastal city in the state of Queensland in northeastern Australia with a population of approximately 173.000. It is located directly on the Coral Sea, near the Great Barrier Reef. Notable sights include the striking granite rock formation Castle Hill, the waterfront promenade The Strand, and the nearby Magnetic Island. Scattered throughout the city, you’ll also find many works of urban art and especially Townsville City Council’s street art program commissions projects, provides funding, and operates a curated infrastructure for urban art in public spaces through the “Street Art Walking Trail”.

Rottnest Island – Reconciliation WA & Wadjemup Project – Urban Art & Prison History

Rottnest Island, known as Wadjemup in the Aboriginal Noongar language, is an island about 18 km off the coast of Perth near Fremantle. Originally a significant site for the Noongar people, the island was used by British colonial authorities from 1838 as a prison. Today, Rottnest Island is a popular tourist destination known for its beaches, turquoise bays, and car-free environment, as well as for the native Quokka. Key sights include the Wadjemup Lighthouse, the former prison site, and numerous colonial-era buildings. At the same time, the island is increasingly recognized as a place of memory and reconciliation, supported by cultural initiatives such as the WADJEMUP PROJECT that aim to acknowledge and share its history.
