Bellapais, or in Turkish called Beylerbeyi, is a small mountain village in northern Cyprus, about 5 kilometres southeast of Kyrenia aka Girne. It is located on the northern slopes of the Kyrenia Mountains, around 350 metres above sea level. The village is best known for Bellapais Abbey, a Gothic monastery built in the 13th century during the Lusignan period. Historically, the village was mainly inhabited by Greek Cypriots. Before 1974, Bellapais had around 600 to 700 inhabitants. According to the 2011 census, the village had approximately 934 residents. Even if it is small, you can still find urban artworks around the streets. Especially the artist HASRET ATAGÖREN has created a little open air gallery with her project BENCHE HASRETCHE.
