CYPRUS: Kyrenia – Girne – Architecture, Street Life and Historic Port

Kyrenia in the north of the island of Cyprus, or Girne as it has been named since the Turkish occupation, is a beautiful coastal town with an interesting historic port facility. The place is also very popular as a yacht place and boat dock. There are a few guesthouses around the port, but they are on a smaller scale. Luckily there are no high skyscrapers or hotel complexes here, they are just outside in the form of huge casino-hotel complexes.

A visit to the small town is definitely worthwhile for a visit to the idyllic harbor to dine on delicious fish dishes and to look at the historic harbor and fortification complex. Other places worth seeing are the Abbey of Bellapais, which is the monastery of the Premonstratensian Order and is situated on the slopes of the Kyrenia Mountains. The structure is considered a masterpiece of Gothic architecture and one of the finest in the entire Middle East.

The rocky plain of Chrysokava near Kyrenia was used as a cemetery in Roman times and later as a limestone quarry. Also recommended is the Tekke of Hazreti-Ömer, a small mausoleum that acts as a Muslim pilgrimage site. Also nearby, on a small promontory, is the Neolithic settlement of Ayios Epiktitos Vrysi, or Çatalköy in Turkish, which you also shouldn’t miss.

There are three museums in the city that can be visited. The Greek Orthodox Church of Archangelos is also an icon museum with a tall bell tower dedicated to Archangel Michael and is considered a symbol of the city. The shipwreck museum in the fortress shows an Iron Age shipwreck that sank around 300 BC. It was discovered in 1965 by the Cypriot diver Andreas Kariolou at a depth of 30 m and recovered from 1967 by Michael Katzenv of the University of Pennsylvania. The small folk art museum, housed in a typical 18th century Cypriot house by the port, displays aspects and artefacts of folk art.
