CHILE: Streetart Angol - Los Alamos 590 - Agua es Vida - RUKA

This mural remains untouched and unaltered, like most of the graffiti in Angol. It includes a signature that reads RUKA and the year 2023. The phrase “Agua es Vida” is prominently displayed on the mural. In English it means „Water is Life“. In Chile, the phrase “agua es vida” is a widespread slogan used by various environmental and social organizations, as water is the essential component that allows life to function and thrive. There are also NGOs and foundations dedicated to protecting rivers and their ecosystems, all of which lobby for legislation, hold protests, and organize actions to ensure that rivers flow freely.

Since it is a universal motto, many entities integrate these ideas into their communications, campaigns and protests, as in this graffiti, to raise awareness among the population. The mural depicts the birth of a river in the Nahuelbuta Mountain Range in the Araucanía Region. The water flows down, pure and crystalline, creating wetlands and giving life to the flora and fauna, as seen in the mural’s flowers, plants and a coypu, which is a large rodent that lives in the region’s rivers and wetlands. Given that water is a finite resource and that access to it is a growing challenge in many parts of the world, protecting it is, quite literally, protecting our future. And this graffiti is there for that very reason!
