AUSTRALIA: Streetart Townsville - Coral Sea Urban Art and Street Art Walking Trail

Townsville is a coastal city in the state of Queensland in northeastern Australia with a population of approximately 173.000. It is located directly on the Coral Sea, near the Great Barrier Reef. The city was founded in the 1860s as a port and trading center, particularly for the livestock industry and gold mining in the hinterland; later, the city also developed into an important military base and economic hub for the region. Notable sights include the striking granite rock formation Castle Hill, the waterfront promenade The Strand, and the nearby Magnetic Island. Scattered throughout the city, you’ll also find many works of urban art, ranging from large murals to smaller pieces that often address themes such as the environment, Indigenous culture, and regional history; motifs like “The Saint” on Castle Hill have become iconic symbols. The Townsville City Council’s street art program specifically commissions works, provides funding, and operates a curated infrastructure for urban art in public spaces through the “Street Art Walking Trail”, which includes an augmented reality feature. At the same time, there is a “Local Street Artist Registry” through which artists are matched with new projects, as well as a legal “Free Wall” at Riverway Skate Park, which is explicitly designated for graffiti and experimental work. Also worth visiting are the numerous murals on Flinders Lane or the annual Strand Ephemera Festival featuring sculptures along the coast.
