CHILE: Streetart Santiago – La Florida – Paraguay 8749 – Rojas Magallanes – Centro Cultural La Barraca – CINES, L’CAMILLE, RIE, SAOCS, SMIDES, SOFRENIA & others

The CENTRO CULTURAL LA BARRACA has existed since 1990. From the beginning, the walls of the cultural center and surrounding houses have been covered in graffiti, artwork that have changed over the years. These photographs presented here are from August 2009 and September 2010. The first graffiti piece depicts a figure inside a clay vase, surrounded by the roots of an Araucaria tree, an artwork by SOFRENIA.

The next piece is signed L’CAMILLE and shows different colors torsos floating in the air, a surreal scene.

Next, we have graffiti with mythological characters, in this case a white unicorn and a woman with butterfly wings, a work by RIE.

Once atop the butterfly wings, SMIDES’ work begins, characterized by floating matchsticks, a common element in his graffiti. The next photo that features matchsticks, fish, and scattered colors, all contained by a black tree, is one of the artwork SMIDES left in this cultural center.

To the right of the black tree, SOFRENIA surprises us again with a masked character playing the guitar inside a room; on the horizon, a whale can be seen with its rear end camouflaged with a stringed instrument.

Next graffiti, and as if it were a Dali painting overflowing with shapes and colors, it’s also an artwork by SMIDES. In one of the photos, you can see the tag SMIDES written on the paintbrush located in the middle of the painting.

The following graffiti by SAOCS, seems like a Picasso painting, and appears as a separate work from the previous artworks, although it is actually connected to the other pieces through SMIDES’ matchstick.

Finally, CINES aka JEKSE’s graffiti is on the metal gate of the centro. It’s also connected to the previous artworks: the hair of CINES’ character rests on SAOCS’ artwork.
