CHILE: Streetart Angol – Cautín 585 – Pai Nahuen

This mural was painted on the wall of a property that once housed the Nahuen Intensive Outpatient Program (PAI, its Spanish acronym), belonging to the Mauricio Heyermann hospital in Angol, a program that provides rehabilitation to pregnant women affected by alcohol and drug use. In fact, today the property is empty, and the mural is the only remaining vestige of that hospital program.

The mural’s base is a band of white and brown mosaic tiles; however, three different styles are evident, suggesting it was likely a community effort; the mural is divided into two scenes. The first scene depicts a sun radiating yellow across the entire wall. Human figures were created using mosaics of various colors. Photographs reveal that some of the small mosaic pieces have been lost over time. The mosaic figures appear to be worshipping a person depicted above a hand.

The second scene shows children dancing around colorful hands and highlights the phrase “La Vida de un Luchador es Aprender de las Derrotas y Sobreponerse a las Adversidades” (The life of a fighter is to learn from defeats and overcome adversity), clearly a phrase of psychological and emotional support for patients of this hospital program. The abandonment of the property has allowed tags to be made on the black metal gate of the property, where today three different tags stand out.
