The Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism (FAU) of Universidad de Chile was founded in 1848 and had several locations throughout its history. In 1976, the FAU moved to its current location. Previously, between 1893 and 1933, this property housed the Barracks of the 2nd Cavalry Regiment, which left several patrimonial buildings that are now occupied by the FAU. Later in this property, there was a market and a girls’ school before the FAU moved to its permanent location.
All these photos were taken in October 2009. The first photos are from the oldest building, which has yellow walls and large windows. The drawings and graffiti in this section are an allegory of world artists, beginning with Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man. There are also tributes to Uruguayan painter Joaquín Torres García, René Magritte, Marc Chagall among other famous artists. There is also a tribute to Professor Gladys Armijo, an artwork done by COAS and ZEWOK aka DIEGO. The artist uses the pseudonym ZEWOK no longer, but he remains linked to art using his own name now, which is DIEGO ROA C.
Moving on to the new buildings and class rooms, several graffiti by BENZO stand out. COAS and WSDM also left their mark on several pieces of graffiti. A Braks flop by BRAKO can be seen on top of a BENZO flop. Also a flop that says Raps by BRAKO can be seen, then a stencil of a man trying to get the TV out of his head. Next to a red door, there’s LOS KEMALILLOS CREW graffiti. There’s also a flop that says Over by OVER 626.
Moving to the patios and gardens of the FAU, I found graffiti by DASIC, KIEN RULA and HESAO among other artists. In an interior courtyard, next to some café tables, there were graffiti depicting political battles and their leaders drawn on the walls and columns. Continuing through the hallways and stairwells, you could see a lot of stencils and their different messages. There was also a GRIN tag in a corner near the ceiling. The last four photos are different flops, all located in a hallway half a meter below ground level.
