USA: Streetart Sitka – Alaska – Graffiti and Urban Art on Baranof Island

Sitka is a coastal city in southeastern Alaska with a current population of about 8.500 inhabitants. The city is located on Baranof Island and is surrounded by an impressive landscape of mountains, forests, and the Pacific Ocean. For thousands of years, the area was home to the Tlingit, one of the most significant indigenous peoples of the North American Northwest Coast. In 1799, Russian fur traders founded the settlement of New Archangelsk here, which became the center of Russian America. In 1867, the official transfer of Alaska from Russia to the United States took place in Sitka. Tlingit culture continues to shape the region today, as seen in traditional art, totem poles, language, and cultural events. Colorful urban art can also be found in the streets. „Humpback Whale and Jellyfish“  –  KIJA ELSTAD

This mural in Sitka was created by local artist KIJA ELSTAD in 2018 with the help of her son and several members of the local community. It is located in the downtown area on a wall near Lincoln Street and Harrigan Centennial Hall. The mural depicts a vibrant underwater scene featuring a large humpback whale, jellyfish, and lush kelp forests. As a playful hidden detail, the artist included several well-known characters as “Easter eggs,” including SpongeBob SquarePants and characters from Finding Nemo, inviting viewers to take a closer look at the painting.
