ROMANIA: Streetart Timișoara – Undertown Streetart Gallery and Urban Art Collection

Timișoara is one of the most important cities in Romania and it is not without reason that it was chosen as the European Capital of Culture in 2023. The city with around 250,000 inhabitants offers an impressive combination of Byzantine, Baroque and Modernist architecture. In the homecity of the mathematician Janos Bolyai, the oldest brewery in Romania was opened in 1718, the empire’s first hospital was built before Vienna and Budapest, the country’s first newspaper was published in 1771 and the first library in the Austro-Hungarian Empire began operating in 1815 on. On March 25th in 1819, the first smallpox vaccine in Central Europe was administered here, Timisoara was the first city in Europe with electric street lighting, the first city in Romania with a tram. Worth visiting are the Piața Victoriei square, the Catedrala Mitropolitană, the fortress and the promenades along the Bega river. Of course there is also a lot of great urban art in such an interesting city. Above all, the UNDERTOWN STREET ART GALLERY under a large bridge to the district Iulius Town is a highlight with works by national and international artists. Here is a collection of images taken by photographers KARIN BOHNENSCHUH, SADERLACHERIN, RADU STOICA and BERTI HANNEL.
