The small enclave of Tamnougalt is a Berber village with around 500 inhabitants near the small town of Agdz in the Draa Valley in southern Morocco. A normal tourist would never go there, except the NOMADS ON WHEELS. They explore the world in a camper van and do good for our environment. During their continous travel they build connections with other people around the globe and motivate everyone to save our planet. They come to very remote corners of the world and it often happens that they also find great works of art even there. Creativity is everywhere, even in the most incredible places or simply somewhere in the middle of nowhere. Like this awesome IGLOO HONG urban art project, organized by the artist DAVID CHOE deep inside the Zagora province.
Near the village of Tamnougalt there is an old clay building complex, where a large number of works of art have been painted in 2016 by the American DAVID CHOE from Los Angeles and a group of befriended artists. Additional creations followed over time. This place is a „Kasbah“, a former fortress built of rammed earth by the Berber princes from the 19th century. Meanwhile it functions as an open air museum. The mix of abstract art, portraits and graffiti together with the isolation in the Moroccan hinterland is simply magnificent. This place is actually a small art gallery that no one knows about. Thanks to Diana and Thomas, you dear readers can also see these works!
The created pieces are different works and you can see similarities in some of them, but you can also see that there are many different styles. So that definitely means that several artists have created works here. DAVID CHOE was the initiator of this IGLOO HONG project and he organized an artist journey to Marrakech and they did several paint sessions in the stone desert of Morocco. Part of this group were EL MAC, ANDREW HEM, MARS 1, AARON HORKEY and DVS 1. This was not the first project of that kind, DAVID CHOE also did a similar action with an artist group in the backlands of Cambodia before.
The photos are from January 2024, who knows how this place will change over time, maybe there will be coming frequently more additional artworks by others. It is definitely fascinating and combined with the whole landscape and surroundings it creates a very interesting atmosphere. So like said before, it is a place which is not famous (yet) and nobody would go there (yet), but if you like the photos and what it is about, then definitely have a stop there when you visit the country.
If you want to know more about the NOMADS ON WHEELS, check out the interview. As well have a look on their channels to see where they are currently around and to follow their exciting adventures. The two are continously travelling the world with a strong committment to nature and environmental protection, which they try to get more attention to in their postings. They inform about interesting spots and they clean up those spots. That’s how you should visit a place! And they document all of these actions on their Homepage, Instagram, Facebook and Youtube to show the beautiful countries and at the same time to motivate to be active for environmental issues. It’s definitely worth taking a look! One way to be active yourself could simply just be by cleaning up your own town and surroundings. If everybody helps, it is not that complicated.
