The Vancouver Mural Festival, or short VMF started in 2016 with demonstrating the transformative power of art in the city. Meanwhile they cover nine neighbourhoods not only every year during the event, but also have several creative and colorful side projects running. In 2020 during the Corona pandemic they started the initiative #MakeArtWhileApart and curated murals on boarded-up storefronts. In summer of the same year artists contributed on that festival edition about 60 new murals plus three weeks of live performances. In winter of 2020 they even opened the urban artworld to augmented reality (AR) with an interactive open-air experience to public space across the city’s core which you can access via the VMF Mobile App. Their vision is to build a society that deeply values art and culture, and their mission is to create meaningful experiences that connect art and people. The proportion of local artists in the more than 250 works of art is currently 92% and 42% of the works were created by women. So far there have been 45 indigenous artists presented. Here in the gallery you can find the great artworks sorted by event year and participated artists. When you click on the pics you will get more photos and information about that spot and the creators, as well at the bottom in the Infothek you can find all contact details to the VMF. Big respect to the organizers of this wounderful happening and thank you for the commitment of the enthusiastic and passionate team to artistically beautify the city, to enlighten it and to bring people together!

The organizers about the project on their website: Vancouver Mural Festival is a world class evolution of a grassroots initiative to transform the way art is experienced in Vancouver. VMF is dedicated to artistic and cultural development in our city. We create experiences that connect art and people in public space. Since 2016, VMF has created 250+ murals, grown our annual summer festival into one of Canada’s premiere celebrations of public art, and continues to reimagine public art and events in our city. Our events and public art installations serve as catalysts for addressing many of the socio-cultural issues facing our city and artistic communities. These include, but are not limited to: public art policy, community building, environmental policy, reconciliation with First Nations, artistic censorship, diversity, cost of living, and the need for culturally sustainable development practices. We recognize that our event and murals are produced on the traditional unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlil̓wətaʔɬ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) First Nations. We strive to incorporate the visual culture of these nations in our festival. We see our murals as an effective way to celebrate our diverse local cultures and their histories, with special focus on providing a platform for the local Nations‘ contemporary and traditional cultural expressions and histories. We are an inclusive event intended for all classes, cultures, genders, ages, abilities, and beyond. We believe that it is crucial to the cultural health of the City of Vancouver to create tangible and lasting visual evidence of the rich diversity of voices living and working here. Our artist roster is an effort to reflect the varied histories present in our city, country, and our world. VMF is organized by Create Vancouver Society, a Registered Non-Profit dedicated to artistic and cultural development in the Lower Mainland.
