Electric Power

This great artwork was made during the MURALFEST in 2017 by ONUR, who is an amazing German-Swiss artist of Turkish origin. The mural is a nod to Quebec hydroelectricity. It is often said that Quebecers are the earthlings who pay the least for their electricity. This assertion is probably true and is based on the fact that at the turn of the 1960s and 1970s some visionary politicians bet on this cleaner resource as the engine of development in Quebec. At that time, the existing hydroelectric dams still belonged to several private companies that provided electricity of varying quality and quantity to the inhabitants of Quebec.

A politician, René Lévesque proposed to nationalize hydroelectricity to ensure better distribution. It was the time when this kind of project was possible. The neoliberalism and neoconservatism that we know were not yet rampant! The reigning cartel of companies was expropriated, Hydroquébec was created, a state corporation responsible for the production and control of hydroelectricity, and the construction of mega dams was launched in northern and eastern Quebec. Later, Robert Bourassa, another politician, launched the James Bay works that would bring Quebec into the 21st century.

Today, no one doubts that by focusing on our main resource, water, to produce our electricity, the Quebec state has placed itself in a leading position in the production of clean energy. This successful nationalization allowed Quebec to develop and structure its economy around this resource. The proof that when we dare and show audacity by shaking up established rules and practices, the results can be positive and spectacular.  –  Patrice Loranger
