Black lives still matter – Sorry is not enough
Here is a great mural related to the black lives matter movement. The artwork was made by DENIAL during the Muralfestival in 2020. Do you notice the dark maple leaf in the middle of the crying woman’s face? In Canada, we often believe that slavery did not exist at home. That visible minorities, including black people, are treated better than among our American neighbors, for example. More and more historical documents and evidence show that this is not the case. Black slaves have lived and worked in Canada since the days of New France. Visible minorities and aboriginals are overrepresented among the unemployed, the homeless, families with precarious income, prisoners. They are poorer, have more mental problems and addictions, have more difficulty finding a job or finding housing.
Recently, the pandemic has hit harder among these categories of citizens. Indeed, these people have more precarious jobs in the services, in particular, in the health services. Remote work is less accessible to them and they have been less protected from the virus by the authorities than the average Canadian. The situation in terms of equal rights and opportunities is far from brilliant in Canada as it is everywhere else. We are very far from being able to say that we have succeeded in this area and great efforts are still to be made to improve the lot of the marginalised people and to achieve the ideals that we set for ourselves. – Patrice Loranger
