Muralfestival 2019: „Gods“ by PICHIAVO and Boulevard Saint-Laurent
This fantastic artwork was created by the artist duo PICHIAVO (PICHI & AVO) from Valencia, Spain during the Muralfestival in 2019. Let’s talk as well a bit about Saint-Laurent Boulevard, also nicknamed: The Main. The first axis opened towards the north from 1860, it has always been an important commercial artery in Montreal. It is the main street facing North-South and it literally cuts Montreal in two in the middle. It is also the imaginary demarcation line of French-speaking Montréal to the east and English-speaking Montréal to the west.
Historically, this artery has been a place of welcome and arrival of immigrants who settled nearby and opened various businesses. Chinatown and Little Italy are still crossed by Boulevard Saint-Laurent. From the 1920s until the 1960s, Boulevard Saint-Laurent lived its most prosperous period. Prohibition in the United States promotes the opening of cabarets, bars and drinking establishments. The Red light was born and will live its heyday under bright neon lights and incessant parties.
Unfortunately, corruption and crime took hold during that time and the streets acquired a bad reputation. Mayor Jean Drapeau gave a great cost to organized crime and the establishments closed during the 60s. A decline followed, but the famous boulevard has not said its last word. Businesses started to flourish again. Bars, restaurants and luxury boutiques opened to the delight of Montréalers. Festivals such as the Mural Festival enlivened the artery which still vibrates today.
I highly recommend walking up the boulevard from south to north from Sherbrooke Street. A multitude of murals, works of art and interesting shops are to be discovered. A street to see, to be seen, to celebrate, have fun, eat and drink. – Patrice Loranger
