The Cafe Tito in Sarajevo is much more than an ordinary café. It is located at Zmaja od Bosne 5, directly next to Wilson’s Promenade and close to the Historical Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The café is entirely dedicated to the former Yugoslav president Josip Broz Tito and combines gastronomy with a kind of small museum. Inside, there are numerous photographs, portraits, busts, old newspapers, telephones, televisions and other objects from the period of Yugoslavia. The outdoor area is also unusually designed: it contains various military vehicles and exhibits, including tanks and a helicopter, which are reminders of the Yugoslav People’s Army.
Tito, who was the president of Yugoslavia from 1953 until his death in 1980, remains a controversial historical figure. While many people remember him as a partisan leader, statesman and symbol of socialist Yugoslavia, his historical legacy also includes political repression and authoritarian rule. The café mainly focuses on a nostalgic remembrance of the Yugoslav period. Especially in Sarajevo, a city whose history has been strongly shaped by the political and social changes following the breakup of Yugoslavia, this gives the café a special significance.
The café is located along the approximately two-kilometre-long Wilson’s Promenade beside the Miljacka River, which is a popular place for walking in Sarajevo. The place is open every day from around 7 a.m. until midnight. Because of its combination of a café, historical collection and unusual outdoor exhibits, Cafe Tito is a distinctive and interesting place in Sarajevo. Visitors can not only have a drink there, but also get an impression of how Tito and the former Yugoslavia are remembered today.
