Historijski muzej Bosne i Hercegovine – Front Artworks

The Historical Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Sarajevo was founded in 1945 as the “Museum of the People’s Revolution of Bosnia and Herzegovina.” It received its current name in 1993. Its modernist building opened in 1963 and was designed by Boris Magaš, Radovan Horvat and Edo Šmidihen. The large floating concrete structure is considered an important example of Yugoslav modernist architecture and was declared a national monument in 2012.

The museum is closely associated with the Siege of Sarajevo (1992–1995). Located near “Sniper Alley,” the building was repeatedly shelled, yet museum staff continued working and protected the collections. Its permanent exhibition “Besieged Sarajevo” documents everyday life during the nearly four-year siege through photographs, personal objects and testimonies. The museum’s collections contain more than 2.300 works of art, along with photographs, archival documents and historical objects. The building was also featured in MoMA’s “Toward a Concrete Utopia” exhibition on Yugoslav architecture and received international conservation support from the Getty Foundation.

In front of the museum at the entrance area you can find wooden artworks made by the artists BO JONZON and VLADIMIR ZORIN. The artist BO JONZON was born in Jokkmokk, Sweden in 1951. He lives and works in Lysvik, in the Swedish province of Värmland, as a sculptor, draftsman, and exhibition installer. His favorite elements are moose and pine nose-cone. VLADIMIR ZORIN was born in 1962 in the Kirov region, Russia and lives now in Petrozavodsk, Karelia. He studied at the V.I. Mukhina Academy of Art and Design in St. Petersburg. For his works he uses birch bark with fir trees in fluorescent plastic.
