Palermo is the capital of the Italian region and island of Sicily and has a population of approximately 640.000 within the city limits; well over a million people live in the metropolitan area. The city was founded in the 8th century B.C. by the Phoenicians and later shaped by the Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, and Spaniards, a history that is still reflected in its architecture and urban layout today. If you’re interested in urban art, you should visit the Ballarò, Kalsa, and Albergheria neighborhoods, where you’ll find plenty of works – from large murals and political slogans to colorful graffiti. The city has garnered international attention through urban art projects as part of initiatives such as BIENNALE ARCIPELAGO MEDITERRANEO aka BAM or the FONDAZIONE MERZ, which occasionally incorporates streetart, as well as through the ongoing revitalization of former problem neighborhoods via murals and cultural projects. Streetart in Palermo is closely linked to social issues: migration, identity, the environment, and the culture of remembrance are recurring themes.
