Atlanta has around 510,000 inhabitants and is the capital of the US state of Georgia. The birthplace of Martin Luther King played an important role both during the American Civil War and during the civil rights movement in the 1960s. At the Atlanta History Center you can learn about the history of the city and there are countless works of art, memorials and cultural sites dedicated to the African-American civil rights activist Martin Luther King. Also of interest are the impressive Georgia Aquarium and the Centennial Olympic Park, which was built downtown for the 1996 Olympic Games. Of course, there are also countless murals and graffiti in the streets and Martin Luther King is a recurring motif here. The local organization LIVING WALLS in particular is doing a huge contribution in making the city more colourful. The team wants to change the public art industry by creating more space, visibility, representation and appreciation for women, people of color and LGBTQIA+ voices. Since its inception in 2010, over 500 public artworks have been created in Atlanta and beyond in collaboration with artists from around the world.
