Here we have a collection of urban artworks around the town of Randeniya close to the elephant orpanage in Pinnawala, therefore you can find several elephant motifas of course. Some of them we have photographed.
“Happy” Elephant Bath… ?
In the region around the state-run elephant orphanage, there are also countless private providers of elephant tours with riding, bathing or similar offers. You should be very careful here, as the majority of providers hardly adhere to the guidelines for the animals protection, as is the case in the large orphanage, and you should view these other offers closely and with skepticism. Often the animals are not really treated well. The mural gives a nice sarcastic expression to this, because the bathing only looks so “happy” for the white tourists, whether this is always so much fun for the animals is questionable. At the governmental orphanage you can help washing this huge mammals when they are at the river and then you are allowed to touch them, but there is no riding on the elephants or similar actions.
