SRI LANKA: Fishermen Town Negombo – Fish Market, Historic Architecture and Streetlife

Negombo is a town with around 140,000 inhabitants on the west coast of Sri Lanka and is located like a suburb town to the north of the capital Colombo. A smaller coty with relaxed beaches and daily fishing life. Ideal for starting a trip if you don’t want to head straight into the hustle and bustle of the big metropolis. However you should definitely allow yourself some days to explore this place. We recommend the idyllic lagoon, which makes the fishing business possible for the locals. You can explore it on a boat tour, which we did and can recommend. This is also where most of the fish are caught, which thrive here and are not found everywhere. The fish markets in Negombo are therefore also interesting; there are two, one large and one small. Both are of course special in their own ways.

If you are excited about architecture and religion, then you will also find a lot in Negombo, namely for all religions. There are churches next to temples and mosques. And everyone follows their religion in their own way, no one has a problem with anyone else and everyone lives together. At least that’s how it seems, of course there are countless problems, as in every country, but the way the religions function together definitely works better than in several other countries.

Also worth seeing are the remains of the Dutch fort from the 17th century, which now houses a prison. The Negombo Lagoon, lined with fishermen’s huts, flows into the Hamilton Canal from the Dutch colonial era, which leads south to Colombo. It is an interesting mix and you should not just stay here for a short transit, but take a closer look at the town for a few days. We can also recommend the guesthouses run by private owners, of which there are several scattered around the area. Here is a collection of photos of street life, the city and the people. Mainly of the fishing and the market, but also of the architectural sights. Check out as well the urban artworks collections from the neighbourhoods Thaladuwa and Kudapaduwa and the page for the Negombo Lagoon and Monkey Island with a cool video.
