The buses and large vehicles for public transportation in Sri Lanka look more or less similar as in other countries in terms of size and construction, but the exterior design is simply unique. Most countries tend to use conservative designs for their public transport buses, like single-colored vehicles with a discreet logo. Things are completely different in Sri Lanka, where the buses are awesome true works of art. Those mostly Indian Ashok Leyland are colorfully upgraded and shine bright in every corner, not only on the outside but also on the inside. The more color, the better. Meanwhile it became a whole work branch and various agencies like VIKUM CREATION, LBN BELIATTA or PROLINE ADVERTISING are specialized in designing the facades of the vehicles. There are official governmental lines, but mostly you will see little businesses, family ventures or even one man drivers, who also give their buses individual names. The artistic buses can be seen driving all over the country, but if you are interested in this topic, an advice is to take a look around the bus stations in larger towns and cities. Normal and unspectacular for locals, a fascinating vehicle art gallery for foreigners! Here is a collection of the great bus designs we have encountered across the island.

This website is more about urban art and creative stuff, not so much the travel advisor in detail. But still, we try to give some usefull info. So just a little rule, before you start with a taxi, tuk tuk, tax tuk, whatever: Always set the price first before you start.
Another helpful advice about transportation in Sri Lanka: We often used the free app “PickMe“. It works in a similar way to Uber or Bolt and you can also see how much a ride would normally cost. The interesting thing about the Sri Lanka version is, that in addition to normal cars in various sizes, you can also book tuk tuks or even a scooter as a ride. So there are many options.

Maybe cars are faster and it is also depending on the time you have, but bus and train rides are unbelievable cheap and we can really recommed those journeys. If you also like adventures. To be honest, yes, there was a break down once and a nearly crash on another ride, but they fixed everything immediately after minutes. And directly after that, the drivers kept on speeding again like crazy while super loud strange music sounds around. On the way people come on board to sell snacks, it also can happen that there are suddenly some chicken on your neighbour seat (yes, the animals) and sometimes there is even fantastic super loud live music by a guy playing bongo, besides the already super loud bus music. It is that mix of strange and nice and not nice and strange, it’s difficult to find words, you just have to see it by your own. So again, yes, we can definitely recommend it!
