Saint Lucia is a small community with a population of around 1100 in the uMkhanyakude district of the KwaZulu-Natal province. The town is a popular starting point for tours in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park around Lake Saint Lucia. It is the largest estuary in South Africa and is home to the highest concentration of hippos and crocodiles in the country. It is also known for its biodiversity and natural beauty. In addition to more than 1200 Nile crocodiles and almost 800 hippos, it is also home to leopards, kudus and black rhinos. Since 1971, Lake Saint Lucia and the turtle beaches and coral reefs of Maputaland have been on the Ramsar Convention list of wetlands of international importance and in December 1999 the park was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
