PARAGUAY: Streetart Asunción – Sajonia – One of the most traditional neighbourhoods

Sajonia is a neighborhood of Asunción, one of the most traditional in the capital of Paraguay. In the area you can see sumptuous residences from the late 1800s and early 1900s, when it housed many of Asunción’s wealthiest families. Of course there are as well numerous great urban artworks in the streets and around the harbour buildings. Sajonia limits with the Paraguay River, and with the Tacumbú and Carlos A. López neighborhoods.

The name “Sajonia ” comes from the German state of Lower Saxony from which Mr. Karl Wilhelm Christian Heisecke Heinrich originated, who together with his son-in-law Eduardo Schaerer, were the creators and developers of the neighborhood between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 19th century.

Despite the fact that the Municipality of Asunción has now reduced the limits of the old Saxony neighborhood, which also included the current Carlos Antonio López and San Antonio neighborhoods, the entire area is still known by that name, as well as the Puerto Saxony, on the Paraguay River.

The main avenue of Sajonia is currently called “Carlos Antonio López”, whose original name was “May 15”. Carlos Antonio López Ynsfrán was a Paraguayan politician and president of Paraguay from 1844 to 1862. The long road course passes in front of the Carlos Antonio López Park and beautiful residences, and has some points of special interest such as the Palace of Justice, the church of Santa Cruz, the house where the Puerto Saxony Sports Club was founded and the facilities of the National Navy.

On May 15th every year the day for Carlos Antonio López day is celebrated with a colorful parade in which famous schools, the Volunteer Fire Department, Boy Scouts and other civil and official groups march, to the rhythm of military and police bands. On this page here we have a collection of urban creations, streetart and graffiti from Sajonia.
