NABU (Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union) – Info about the kingfisher

The bird, fondly called the “flying gem” for its beauty and colorfulness, represents natural streams and floodplains. Where the name of the sparrow-sized kingfisher comes from is disputed. Some derive it from the Old High German “eisan” for “shimmer” or “shine”. The name “Iridescent Bird” fits the shimmering play of colors. The kingfisher can be observed all year round at calm flowing and standing, clear waters. “Shock diving” it hunts mainly small fish from 4 to 7 centimeters in length.
